Paving the way
We have two new NP's in our Cardiology department that started in the last month. They both are working in CHF/VAD destination therapy with Dr Mahr and their titles are NP coordinators. This is a new role here at MCP/Froedtert and will be developed as they go.... with Dr mahr's vision. We already have an RN ( studying to be an NP) in the role of coordinator that has been with Dr Mahr for the past year and knows some of the job expectations but not necessarily NP level yet. The RN that has been in the role has been a great help in introduction to the job they will be performing. The RN has done alot of foot work in developing some outlines for the new NPS to follow.
I sat down with Dr Mahr and asked specific goal he expects to see with each NP in the next 3-6 and 9 months. This will help in making sure the NP is working toward these goals and prevent pitfalls I hope.
First thing is EPIC utilization (of course) and VAD management. I learned that any access to epic has a car form? that needs to be filled out by administrator or clinic manager in order to change RN status in epic, to NP status. We do not have privileges to do this for them. I am finding this form must be a pain to fill out. I also learned that if you need to change access ASAP in Epic, you have to have a legit reason to have it processed same day. This can be frustrating when the service they are hired to perform in is super busy from the get go, and anticipation to get the new NP's up in running is high!
As far as VAD management, Dr Mahr has been working closely with the NP's and RN in obtaining the hands on training, although I am not quite sure if they are capturing the documentation of core specific privileges. I know they are aware of this but not sure how this is getting done.
I sat down with the two NP's twice now to listen to what is going well and what they need help with, such as epic orders, screen changes. I also had the opportunity to get them to attend our intro to APP Council meeting on Thursday and introduced them them to the group. I think this was kind of nice to meet the other APPs here sooner than later.
Recap: First few weeks of orientation
Met with attending physician to get a 3-6-9 month plans and goal setting
Review new hire check list and customize the first month based on core specific priorities.
Met with new NP's twice and frequent follow up stuff as it pertains to epic.
Introduce to other APP's and eventually Julie Raaum, Dr Biblo...
I have also been jotting notes as I go of stuff I gave them or things I need to still do:
*vacation forms
*adding them to grand rounds E mail and pager blasts as well as department based grand rounds
*Algorithm's for cards specific stuff, afib CHADS 2 score, pre op...
*Got them added to APP email listing with Gail Oehlke her email: goehlke@mcw.edu
*on line resources such as Up to Date www.uptodate.com
It will be great to hear feedback!
